FOOD FORTIFICATION

  FOOD FORTIFICATION

WHAT IS  FOOD FORTIFICATION?

Food fortification is process of increasing the content of essential  micronutrients in food. It enhances or improves the nutritional quality of the diet or food.

Ironically, the requirement of extra nutrients is essential for the public health. It is a public health policy which aims to reduce micronutrient malnutrition in public.

ENRICHMENT

Enrichment is another word, a practice of adding micronutrients to a food which were lost during the processing.

Many of you might be wondering of 'processing' term, right!

The foods we consume are all in processed form. During food preparation process some natural nutritional properties of food often lost. It occurs due to certain reasons for example time, temp, light, etc.

So the purpose of getting lost nutrients back in to that food is described as 'enrichment of food'. It simply has been restored to its orginal state.

SOME FORTIFIED FOODS ARE :

• Milk with vitamin D
• Salt with Iodine
• Fruit juice with calcium
• Toothpaste with flouride
• Flour with Folic acid
• Bread with niacin

So, the purpose of incorporating fortified foods in your regular lifestyle is to improve nutritional quality of food, to reduce nutritional disorders, for body building and useful in medical treatments as well.
